**Learning guide / English explanation**

## Read in English. Practise in Urdu.

A companion to the complete Urdu communication workbook.

This edition keeps the complete Urdu workbook and adds matching English explanations after its teaching pages. The English explains the intention, the choices available, and what the sample wording does. The Urdu remains the language of practice.

### How the paired pages work

1. Read the Urdu lesson and use its English companion to understand the purpose.
2. For a worked conversation, compare the speaker turns in order. The English rendering follows the Urdu dialogue.
3. For an exercise, read the situation in either language, then answer in your own Urdu before looking at the response guide.
4. Use the companion links at the end of each section to move between Urdu and its English explanation. The contents links to the sections in this Markdown edition.

### Meaning, not rigid translation

The English renderings explain the intended meaning in these examples. They are not a rule that every Urdu expression always means the same thing. Use the actual situation and the person’s answer to check your interpretation.

This is an original practice workbook, not an accredited course or a validated assessment. Its fictional conversations are teaching examples, not recordings or guarantees of a particular response.

**Learning guide / English explanation**

## The practice loop

The Urdu diagram moves through six stages. The aim is to choose a useful action and handle the reply, not simply to memorize a sentence.

1. Situation: identify what happened and what was actually said.
2. Understanding: separate known facts from assumptions. What remains unclear?
3. Purpose: choose what to do, such as clarify, request, refuse, reconsider, or apologize.
4. Response: say it in simple Urdu.
5. Next turn: listen to the reply and respond to the information it adds.
6. Revision: identify one improvement and try that difficult turn again.

### A workable session

As a starting routine, spend about twenty minutes recalling one earlier move, reading one example, trying an exchange, and retrying it after feedback. This is a suggested schedule, not a requirement. On a busy day, do one prompt, one correction, and one retry.

### What success means

Judge your own clarity, honesty, listening, and follow-through. Agreement is not required. A genuine no, an apology, a pause, or an acknowledgment that the other person is right can all be appropriate outcomes.

For the twelve chapters, use five sessions per chapter as an initial plan: learn the move, recall it, handle follow-up, change the context, and review. Repeat a chapter when needed; the schedule is not a promise of mastery.

## Establish your starting point

The next six situations form the initial assessment. Give your first natural answer without reading model responses. The English pages translate the case instructions; they do not supply an answer.

1. Read the situation and identify who is speaking.
2. Give one or two opening sentences in Urdu.
3. Imagine or ask a partner to supply the next reply. Continue for another turn.
4. Record the words you actually used, then note what became difficult.

### Observe, do not label yourself

Useful observations are specific: “I said yes before checking,” “My no sounded like maybe,” or “I explained for too long after a clear question.” These observations are more actionable than judging your entire personality.

### Keep the language yours

The existing Urdu uses masculine first-person forms in several examples. Adjust the grammar to your own speech when needed. For example, the ending

Change the time, quantity, or relationship only when the exercise allows it. Do not remove the difficulty by inventing an extra resource or a different deadline.

**What those four habits sound like.** *An instant yes*, “Sure, I will be there”, commits before you have checked. *Over-explaining* buries the actual answer under reasons. *Going quiet*, or “we will see”, is easily heard as agreement. *Going hard*, “That is not my job”, may hold a fair limit in a way that costs you the relationship. Recognising your own default is the purpose of these six cases.

Save these first attempts. Compare them with later performance on unfamiliar situations, not just with a model sentence you have memorized.

[English explanation](#english-10)

**Chapter 01 / English explanation**

## Pause before you commit

Make room for an informed answer.

The task is to separate receiving a request from accepting it. Find out what is being asked, when an answer is genuinely needed, and what you can realistically promise.

### What to do

1. Listen to the complete request before answering.
2. Identify the missing information, such as your availability or the amount of work.
3. Ask for thinking time when you need it.
4. Give a realistic time for your answer, then follow through.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **Let me think for a moment.**
A gentle pause, not a yes.
2. **I will give you a clear answer by this evening.**
This promises an answer, not acceptance.
3. **Do you need an answer now, or is there some time?**
Checks the actual deadline without accusing anyone.
4. **I cannot give a definite yes yet.**
Prevents uncertainty from being treated as a commitment.

Do not offer a later answer just to avoid saying no. If the other person truly needs an immediate decision and you cannot commit, a clear no may be the honest answer.

[Urdu practice](#page-10)

---

[English explanation](#english-11)

**Chapter 01 / English explanation**

## Ask for time without promising to attend

A friend wants you to accompany them tomorrow. You have not checked your existing responsibilities. They need to make arrangements tonight.

**Friend**

> Will you come with me tomorrow? Tell me now.

**You**

> Let me check my commitments first. I will tell you by six this evening.

**Friend**

> I also need to ask someone else.

**You**

> That is fine. If you need a decision before six, do not wait for me. I cannot give a definite yes yet.

**Friend**

> It is fine if you tell me by six.

**You**

> Certainly. I will get back to you myself by six.

### What to notice

The reply gives a time for an answer, not a promise to attend. It also leaves the friend free to make other arrangements. The final sentence makes you responsible for following up.

### When the situation changes

If an answer is genuinely needed now, the fallback means: 'Then my answer for now is no, because I cannot yet promise to come.' Do not keep asking the friend to wait when waiting is not workable.

**Chapter 01 / English explanation**

## An immediate yes

Speaking with: Friend

A friend wants you to accompany them tomorrow. You have not checked your existing responsibilities at home.

Your objective: Take reasonable time before giving a yes or no.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> You will come with me tomorrow, won't you? Tell me now.

### Before you answer

Name the facts you must respect. Choose the immediate purpose of your reply, then say one or two sentences in Urdu. Do not read the answer guide yet.

_Write your response here._

### The next turn

> **Follow-up · English meaning**
>
> What is there to think about? Just say yes.

Now answer in Urdu again. Has any relevant fact changed, or is the person repeating the request, raising a concern, or explaining a real constraint?

The aim is an appropriate response, not a particular length or a guaranteed agreement. Keep the full exchange in Urdu during practice.

## Same skill, different situations

Keep the chapter’s skill, but adapt your words to each new situation. Try each case before reading its response guide.

### 02. An undefined responsibility

Speaking with: Colleague

You are asked to take over something, but neither the task nor its timing is clear.

Your objective: Understand the scope before accepting responsibility.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> Please handle this. There is not much to it.

### 03. A genuine deadline

Speaking with: Organizer

You need to confirm use of a shared room by 2 p.m. One essential person's availability is still unknown.

Your objective: Clarify the unknown detail without dismissing a real deadline as pressure.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> Let me know by two if you need the room.

### Your plan

For each case: what must you understand, what will you say first, and what would make you change your answer? Write the response in Urdu on the paired exercise page.

**Follow-up lines.** 02: “Say yes first; I will explain the details later” 03: “After two I will make the room available to others”

**Chapter 01 / English explanation**

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. An immediate yes

> I will not promise yet. I will check my responsibilities at home and let you know by six this evening.

Possible follow-up: What is there to think about? Just say yes.

The answer separates checking your availability from accepting the invitation. The reply time must be one you can keep.

Possible ending: I will answer by six; until then, please do not treat my attendance as confirmed.

### 02. An undefined responsibility

> First tell me what needs doing and by when. Then I can tell you what I can take on.

Possible follow-up: Say yes first; I will explain the details later.

The question concerns the actual commitment, not whether the colleague calls it small. A partial offer is optional, not required.

Possible ending: I cannot take on the entire task today, but I can handle the part that takes an hour.

### 03. A genuine deadline

> I need to check one person's availability. I will answer by 1:45; if you have not heard from me, do not hold the room for me.

Possible follow-up: After two I will make the room available to others.

A real deadline can be respected without inventing certainty. The organizer knows what to do if confirmation does not arrive.

Possible ending: It is not confirmed from my side yet. You will have a clear answer by 1:45.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 02 / English explanation**

## Listen and clarify

Check the meaning instead of guessing it.

A vague complaint, an indirect answer, or a change of tone does not establish the other person's intention. Ask a specific question and check whether your understanding is correct.

### What to do

1. Let the person finish their point.
2. Ask one clear question at a time.
3. Summarize what you understood in your own words.
4. Keep what was actually said separate from your interpretation.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **Which part are you referring to?**
Narrows a broad comment to a specific issue.
2. **Please give me an example so I can understand correctly.**
 Explains why you need detail.
3. **Have I understood you correctly?**
Invites correction; it is not a claim to know their thoughts.
4. **So the main difficulty is that ...?**
Offer your interpretation as a question, not a verdict.

Do not turn clarification into interrogation. Once a point has been made clearly, respond to it instead of asking the same question to postpone an answer.

## Check what an indirect answer means

A family outing is being planned. 'Whatever you think is best' might be agreement, but there may still be a concern. The dialogue discovers the answer instead of assuming it.

**Other person**

> Whatever you think is best.

**You**

> Should I take that as your agreement and proceed, or is something still unresolved?

**Other person**

> I do not object to the gathering. Getting home late would be difficult.

**You**

> So the place is fine, and the real difficulty is the return time?

**Other person**

> Yes. I have to get up early the next morning.

**You**

> Would this arrangement work for you if we were home by nine?

**Other person**

> Yes, that would be fine.

**You**

> Then we agree on attending, and we will be home by nine. I will let the host know beforehand too.

### What to notice

The first question leaves room for either consent or a concern. The summary is checked, then a conditional proposal addresses the actual difficulty. Only after the other person agrees is the arrangement treated as settled.

### When the situation changes

If the person does not want to attend at all, changing the return time does not establish consent. Listen to that answer and reconsider the shared decision.

## Vague dissatisfaction with work

Speaking with: Client

Someone rejects your work without identifying the specific problem.

Your objective: Ask for an example and the required change before defending the work.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> This is not what I expected.

### Before you answer

Name the facts you must respect. Choose the immediate purpose of your reply, then say one or two sentences in Urdu. Do not read the answer guide yet.

_Write your response here._

### The next turn

Now answer in Urdu again. Has any relevant fact changed, or is the person repeating the request, raising a concern, or explaining a real constraint?

Keep the chapter’s skill, but adapt your words to each new situation. Try each case before reading its response guide.

### 02. Unclear agreement

Speaking with: Family member

While planning a shared gathering, the other person says, 'Whatever you think is best.' You do not know whether this is agreement or something else.

Your objective: Check consent instead of claiming certainty from tone.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> Whatever you think is best.

### 03. Discover the current need

Speaking with: Colleague

A colleague says you are never available when needed. You have limited time today and do not yet know the specific request.

Your objective: Understand today's need rather than arguing about a sweeping accusation.

> **Opening line · English meaning**

### Your plan

For each case: what must you understand, what will you say first, and what would make you change your answer? Write the response in Urdu on the paired exercise page.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Vague dissatisfaction with work

> Which part differs from your expectations? Please give me an example so I can understand correctly.

Possible follow-up: What is the point if I have to explain everything?

You seek actionable information rather than guessing or defending every part. Continue addressing the work, not the remark about having to explain.

Possible ending: So the first two parts are right, and the order of the last part needs changing. Have I understood correctly?

### 02. Unclear agreement

> Should I take that as your agreement and proceed, or is something still unresolved?

Possible follow-up: I already said it. What else should I tell you?

The question allows a genuine yes or a concern. It should not be delivered as an accusation of hidden resentment.

Possible ending: We agree about attending; we will settle the return time first.

### 03. Discover the current need

> What do you need help with today? Let me understand that first, then I can say how much I can do.

Possible follow-up: You should understand for yourself that I am struggling.

The question redirects the exchange to something answerable. It does not admit that you have never helped or promise unlimited help now.

Possible ending: We can look at the important part together for half an hour; I cannot do the whole task today.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

[English explanation](#english-20)

**Chapter 03 / English explanation**

## Say what you need

Make a request, not a hint.

State the action you need and, where relevant, the amount or deadline. Give a brief truthful reason. A request also leaves room for the other person to explain a constraint or decline.

### What to do

1. Ask for one identifiable action.
2. Give a short, truthful reason when useful.
3. Specify the time, amount, or other important detail.
4. Listen to the answer rather than assuming agreement.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **I need this amount by Thursday.**
Names the need and its timing.
2. **Can you do this today?**
Asks about capacity; wait for the answer.
3. **I would like it to be quiet during this time.**
State the particular period rather than criticizing the person.
4. **If it is not possible, please tell me clearly.**
Invites an honest answer instead of a reluctant promise.

Clarity does not create entitlement. For a shared household decision, listen to the other person's workload as well as describing your own.

**Chapter 03 / English explanation**

## Start a conversation about payment due

Payment for completed work was due Tuesday. It is now Thursday. You need to initiate the reminder. This is a fictional communication exercise, not legal or financial advice.

**You**

> Payment for the previous work was due Tuesday, but it has not arrived. When will you be able to send it?

**Other person**

> I am arranging it. I will send it soon.

**You**

> By which day? I need to plan accordingly.

**Other person**

> I can send half on Monday.

**You**

> And by which day will the remaining amount arrive?

**Other person**

> By Thursday.

**You**

> So half will arrive Monday and the remainder Thursday. I will put that in a message; please tell me if I have misunderstood anything.

### What to notice

The opening states a specific unmet commitment. 'Soon' is clarified into dates, and both parts of the payment are covered. The summary gives the other person an opportunity to correct the understanding.

### When the situation changes

If no date can be given, do not invent one to end neatly. Record that the date is unresolved and ask when a reliable update can be provided. A promised date is not proof that payment will occur.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Ask for payment due

> Payment for the previous work was due Tuesday, but it has not arrived. When will you be able to send it?

Possible follow-up: You keep bringing up the money.

This names an agreed expectation and asks a specific question. Do not replace it with an unrelated apology for asking.

Possible ending: So half will arrive Monday and the remainder Thursday. I will put that in a message.

### 02. Share household work

> Doing everything today will be difficult for me. Could you do the shopping while I handle the rest? Let me also hear what you have to do.

Possible follow-up: Do you not see the work I do?

You propose a division of work without claiming the other person does nothing. If the proposed split is not workable, hear why and reconsider.

Possible ending: Today you will do the shopping and I will handle the rest. Tomorrow let us plan the whole week together.

### 03. Ask for a short quiet period

> I need ten minutes for an important conversation. Could you keep the volume down for that time? Otherwise, I can move to another room.

Possible follow-up: This is a home. Are we not allowed to talk?

The request has a duration and concerns volume, not a ban on conversation. The alternative is useful only if another room is actually available.

Possible ending: Thank you. The conversation will be finished in ten minutes.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 04 / English explanation**

## Refuse and hold a boundary

Be considerate without leaving false hope.

A refusal needs to communicate an actual decision. You can be respectful without inventing excuses, giving a new reason after every objection, or offering an alternative you do not want to provide.

### What to do

1. Make the answer understandable.
2. Give a brief reason when it is useful and true.
3. Do not change the answer merely because the request is repeated.
4. Offer an alternative only when it is genuinely available and acceptable to you.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **That is not possible for me this time.**
A considerate refusal tied to this occasion.
2. **I am not willing to agree to that.**
States your choice rather than pretending you are unable.
3. **My answer on this matter is no.**
 An explicit, firm decision.
4. **I do not want to answer that question.**
Sets a privacy boundary without making up information.

A real new fact may justify reconsidering. Repetition alone is not a new fact. The other person can be disappointed even when your refusal is appropriate.

> Come with me tomorrow. It will take only two hours.

**You**

> I will not be able to come tomorrow. I already have a responsibility at home.

**Friend**

> I cannot get this done without you.

**You**

> I understand that you need someone with you. Even so, I cannot come tomorrow.

**Friend**

> If not in the morning, could you come in the evening?

**You**

> I cannot come tomorrow evening either, so please do not wait for me.

**Friend**

> All right, then I will have to ask someone else.

**You**

> Yes, I cannot accompany you this time.

### What to notice

The reason stays consistent because the facts have not changed. The response acknowledges the friend's need without offering unavailable time. The closing removes any expectation that you might still arrive.

### When the situation changes

The friend may remain upset. In the role-play, do not automatically make them happy because the learner used a polished sentence. An appropriate ending can be respectful and still disappointing.

## Decline a loan request

Speaking with: Friend

A friend asks to borrow money. You do not want to lend it; do not invent an inability to pay as your explanation.

Your objective: State your choice clearly without making up a constraint.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> Please lend me some money. I will return it next month.

### Before you answer

Name the facts you must respect. Choose the immediate purpose of your reply, then say one or two sentences in Urdu. Do not read the answer guide yet.

_Write your response here._

### The next turn

> **Follow-up · English meaning**
>
> Do you keep such strict accounts even in friendship?

Now answer in Urdu again. Has any relevant fact changed, or is the person repeating the request, raising a concern, or explaining a real constraint?

The aim is an appropriate response, not a particular length or a guaranteed agreement. Keep the full exchange in Urdu during practice.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Decline a loan request

> I am sorry, but I will not promise a loan at this time.

Possible follow-up: Do you keep such strict accounts even in friendship?

This refuses without a false financial excuse. If 'at this time' leaves a misleading hope, use the clearer ending below. Do not imply a future loan you do not intend.

Possible ending: I will not lend the money, so please do not wait for it from me.

### 02. Repeated requests to accompany someone

> I will not be able to come tomorrow. I already have a responsibility at home.

Possible follow-up: I cannot get it done without you.

The response acknowledges the actual limit. You do not need a new excuse for every version of the same request.

Possible ending: I cannot come tomorrow evening either; please do not wait for me.

### 03. Keep personal information private

> I prefer to keep the details of my income private.

Possible follow-up: Will you hide that from us too?

The boundary concerns what you disclose. You do not need to prove that the questioner has bad intentions in order to decline.

Possible ending: I do not want to discuss those details; let us talk about something else.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 05 / English explanation**

## Disagree and reconsider

Challenge the point, not the person.

Identify the exact issue you see differently. Explain your reason, examine relevant information, and remain willing to revise a mistaken view. Holding a boundary is different from defending an error.

### What to do

1. Name the specific point of disagreement.
2. Discuss the issue rather than the person's character.
3. Ask for an example or check the relevant information.
4. Change your position openly when the facts justify it.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **My view on this point is different.**
A direct statement of disagreement without a personal attack.
2. **I am looking at this a little differently.**
A softer opening; explain the difference next.
3. **Can you give an example of that?**
Requests support rather than dismissing the claim.
4. **That is correct; I misunderstood it earlier.**
Acknowledges a correction without hiding behind ambiguity.

Do not start with 'You are right' when you do not agree. You can acknowledge a person's concern without accepting their conclusion.

[Urdu practice](#page-30)

---

## Change your view when information changes

Two people disagree about a shared purchase. One wants to buy now; the other prefers to wait. The dialogue explores the reason for buying sooner.

**Other person**

> You delay everything. We should buy it now.

**You**

> You may be frustrated by my delay, but I want to consider the need for this purchase and its timing separately. What is the main reason to buy now?

**Other person**

> The price may increase next week.

**You**

> If there is reliable information about an increase, let us look at it. That could change my view about waiting.

**Other person**

> Here is the shop's message.

**You**

> I did not know that before. With this information, I am willing to buy today; let us agree on the spending limit first.

### What to notice

The learner does not debate the sweeping claim 'everything'. They ask for the relevant reason and make reconsideration possible. Their revised position still includes a practical spending limit.

### When the situation changes

For this teaching example, the message is treated as relevant information. A seller's message is not automatically conclusive evidence or a reason to buy. In a different scenario, inspect the claim and other constraints before changing your decision.

### 01. Correct an experienced colleague

> The written notice I have says Thursday. Let us look at it together once.

Possible follow-up: I remember what I said.

Refer to the record, not the person's intelligence or memory. Allow for an update you may have missed.

Possible ending: So the deadline is Thursday. I will write the work schedule accordingly.

### 02. Disagree about a shared choice

> My concern is more about timing than money. If a two-day delay is acceptable, we can consider the cheaper method too.

Possible follow-up: You always increase the cost.

You make the trade-off explicit. First check whether the delay is acceptable instead of repeating which option each person likes.

Possible ending: Let us first decide whether a two-day delay is acceptable; then the choice will be easier.

### 03. Revise a mistaken claim

> You are right. The message was there; I had not seen it. What I said was incorrect.

Possible follow-up: Then why did you say in front of everyone that it was not sent?

The response names your error rather than shifting to a new criticism. Correcting the record with the same audience can be part of the repair.

Possible ending: I will also correct this in front of the people to whom I said it.

**Chapter 06 / English explanation**

## Handle pressure and tension

Slow the exchange and check what is needed.

When a discussion feels urgent or heated, first identify the immediate decision and the reason for the urgency. The exercises cover ordinary disagreement, not situations where continuing the conversation is unsafe.

### What to do

1. Try to keep your own volume and pace steady.
2. Ask why an immediate answer is required.
3. Request a pause when needed and specify when to return.
4. Separate gratitude for past help from agreement to the present request.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **Let us pause and talk this through.**
An invitation to slow down, not an order to stop feeling upset.
2. **Does this decision have to be made now?**
 Checks the deadline.
3. **It is becoming difficult to continue in this manner.**
Names the problem with the exchange rather than insulting the person.
4. **I appreciate the earlier help; let us consider this decision separately.**
Keeps gratitude and current consent distinct.

A pause is not a guarantee that the other person will calm down. If you promise to restart the discussion, do so. Where there are threats or intimidation, prioritize safety rather than completing an exercise.

[Urdu practice](#page-35)

---

**Chapter 06 / English explanation**

## Find the real deadline

Someone demands an immediate answer, although an answer before tomorrow morning would meet their practical need.

**Other person**

> Say yes or no now. I do not want to wait.

**You**

> If an answer is needed immediately, please explain why. I need to check one thing before deciding.

**Other person**

> Actually, I need to make arrangements tomorrow morning.

**You**

> Then I can answer by nine tonight. If you must decide sooner, do not wait for me.

**Other person**

> Fine. Let me know by nine.

**You**

> Certainly. I will get back to you myself.

### What to notice

The question tests the timing rather than labeling the person as manipulative. Once the real need is clear, the learner proposes a definite reply time and preserves the other person's freedom to act sooner.

### When the situation changes

If the deadline really is immediate, do not assume the same delay will work. Decide whether you can responsibly commit now; declining may be the appropriate result.

## Same skill, different situations

Keep the chapter’s skill, but adapt your words to each new situation. Try each case before reading its response guide.

### 02. Both voices are rising

Speaking with: Family member

Both of you are raising your voices during an ordinary disagreement. There is no immediate danger in this exercise.

Your objective: Request a break and a return time instead of abandoning the issue.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> Are you even listening to me?

### 03. Past help used to press a new request

Speaking with: Relative

A relative recalls help they gave you and asks for something you do not want to agree to.

Your objective: Acknowledge the help while deciding the current request separately.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> We did so much for you, and now you will not even do this?

### Your plan

For each case: what must you understand, what will you say first, and what would make you change your answer? Write the response in Urdu on the paired exercise page.

**Follow-up lines.** 02: “You avoid the discussion every time” 03: “It seems you have forgotten everything”

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Pressure for an immediate decision

> Is there a particular reason an answer is needed now? I need to check my current work first. I can give a clear answer by tomorrow afternoon.

Possible follow-up: If you keep thinking, you will miss the opportunity.

Check the real deadline. If waiting is not possible, assess the offer on that basis rather than pretending you can safely commit.

Possible ending: Until I confirm, please do not treat this as my acceptance.

### 02. Both voices are rising

> I want to hear you, but we are both speaking loudly right now. Let us talk again in half an hour.

Possible follow-up: You avoid the discussion every time.

The learner includes their own behavior instead of ordering only the other person to calm down. A return time makes the pause specific.

Possible ending: I will restart the conversation myself in half an hour.

### 03. Past help used to press a new request

> I remember your help and I am grateful for it. However, I will not say yes to this request.

Possible follow-up: It seems you have forgotten everything.

The answer does not deny the earlier kindness. Gratitude is expressed without converting it into unrestricted future consent.

Possible ending: I am not denying your earlier help; I am simply not agreeing to this request.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 07 / English explanation**

## Negotiate the terms

Look at price, time, and amount of work together.

Identify what is essential and what can change on each side. A useful proposal links a concession to a specific condition instead of quietly accepting incompatible demands.

### What to do

1. Separate your non-negotiable limits from your preferences.
2. Ask which outcome matters most to the other person.
3. Link any concession to a clear condition.
4. Accept that no agreement may be possible on the available terms.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **What matters most to you here?**
Discovers priorities before proposing a trade-off.
2. **I can do this if more time is available.**
The offer depends on the deadline changing.
3. **This price is possible if the amount of work is reduced.**
Connects the lower price to a smaller scope.
4. **We are not reaching agreement on these terms.**
Names a mismatch without treating either person as an enemy.

Use only genuine limits and alternatives. Do not invent competing offers or promise work you cannot deliver. Changing a proposal does not erase obligations already agreed.

**Chapter 07 / English explanation**

## Renegotiate added work

Two tasks were agreed for Friday at one price. A third is requested. All three are not possible by Friday. The first task and the new one can fit the existing price, but the second would then be excluded.

**Client**

> Please do this additional task for the same amount.

**You**

> It was not included in our earlier agreement. If we add it, either one task moves later, or the time and price need to change.

**Client**

> We cannot increase the price, and we need it Friday.

**You**

> Then which two tasks are the highest priority for Friday?

**Client**

> The first and this new one. We can discuss the second later.

**You**

> Agreed. I will deliver the first and the new task by Friday for the agreed amount. The second is not included now; we will discuss it separately later.

**Client**

> Yes, let us do that.

**You**

> I will put it in a message so that we have the same understanding.

### What to notice

The learner asks about priorities and states exactly what the revised price includes. 'Later' is not left to imply free additional work. The original arrangement changes through discussion, not silently.

### When the situation changes

If all three are demanded at the original price and deadline, the learner can decline the extra commitment while honoring the original two-task agreement. No agreement on the addition is a valid ending.

Your objective: Discuss the scope rather than simply cutting the price.

> **Opening line · English meaning**

### 03. No agreement is also an outcome

Speaking with: Buyer

At the agreed quality, your minimum acceptable price is 20,000. The buyer cannot pay above 15,000, and the amount of work cannot be reduced.

Your objective: Accept the mismatch respectfully instead of forcing an agreement.

**Chapter 07 / English explanation**

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Price and amount of work

> The whole job is not possible at that price. I can do two essential parts for 30,000; which parts do you need first?

Possible follow-up: Someone else will do everything for that amount.

The offer connects the lower price to a reduced scope. Do not invent objections to the other provider or agree to work that remains unviable.

Possible ending: So the first two parts are included for 30,000. The third will be agreed separately.

### 02. Limited work within limited time

> Two tasks can be completed by Friday. Which two should come first? We can schedule the third for Monday.

Possible follow-up: All three are important to me.

Importance does not by itself create capacity. Clarify the order or explore a real change in resources, scope, or time.

Possible ending: The first and second will arrive Friday; the third on Monday.

### 03. No agreement is also an outcome

> I cannot take this work for less than 20,000. Our terms are not matching at the moment.

Possible follow-up: So you are turning down this work?

The case gives no workable overlap. A polite ending is more accurate than a fictional compromise that violates the stated limit.

Possible ending: We will not be able to agree this time. Thank you for your time.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 08 / English explanation**

## Make expectations explicit

Clarify who does what, by when, and within which limits.

A conversation about work should leave both sides with the same understanding of the task. When the work or timing changes, revisit the arrangement instead of assuming the old promise still covers everything.

### What to do

1. Clarify what is included before work starts.
2. Revisit the terms when a change affects the work.
3. Communicate a likely delay promptly and accurately.
4. Send a short summary of what has actually been agreed.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **This was not included in the work we agreed earlier.**
Identifies a change without accusing the requester.
2. **This change will also affect the timing.**
Connects the new request to its practical consequence.
3. **I cannot finish by the agreed time; this is the revised date.**
Give an honest forecast, then discuss whether it works.
4. **I will write down what we agreed.**
Checks shared understanding; it does not create agreement by itself.

A new date is a proposal until the other side accepts it. Own a delay that is yours rather than presenting it as a concession you are generously making.

[Urdu practice](#page-45)

---

## Communicate a delay before being asked

You know the work will not be complete by the agreed day. The other person has not yet asked for an update.

**You**

> I want to let you know in advance that the work will not be complete by Thursday. At my current pace, Saturday is a realistic date.

**Client**

> Why did you not tell me earlier?

**You**

> I became certain yesterday evening that I would run short of time. I should have told you then. I can now explain which part I can deliver by Thursday.

**Client**

> Give me the important part Thursday and the rest Saturday.

**You**

> Agreed. The important part Thursday, the rest Saturday. I will write and send that schedule today.

### What to notice

The learner initiates the difficult update, acknowledges that they should have reported it earlier, and explains what is still achievable. The new delivery pattern is confirmed after the other person responds.

### When the situation changes

The other person might not accept Saturday. Then discuss the actual options rather than treating your forecast as a unilateral new agreement. Avoid reassurance that conflicts with what you know.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. A request for added work

> It was not included in the work agreed earlier. If we add it, either one task moves later, or the time and price change.

Possible follow-up: It is such a small task. Why discuss it separately?

The word 'small' does not settle the practical effect. Identify what changes and obtain agreement before treating the extra work as included.

Possible ending: The first and new task by Friday at the agreed price. The second is not included now; we will agree it separately later.

### 02. Report a delay early

> I underestimated the time. The complete work will be ready Thursday. I can provide the important part Wednesday; that is why I am telling you in advance.

Possible follow-up: I relied on your promise.

The answer owns the inaccurate estimate and distinguishes a partial delivery from completion. A new schedule still needs discussion and acceptance.

Possible ending: The important part by Wednesday noon, the remainder by Thursday evening. The delay is my responsibility.

### 03. Clarify before assigning work

> I need one page with three main points by Thursday noon. Please first tell me if there is an obstacle.

Possible follow-up: There is not enough time. Which part is most important?

The person can now assess the request. If they identify a constraint, discuss it rather than repeating the instruction as though it were consent.

Possible ending: So one page, three main points, by Thursday noon. Let me know early if an obstacle arises.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 09 / English explanation**

## Handle mistakes and responsibility

Own your part without accepting an inaccurate whole.

When a complaint is correct, acknowledge the actual mistake and discuss a useful repair. When a broad accusation combines different events, separate those events without denying your own contribution.

### What to do

1. Admit a genuine mistake directly.
2. Name a realistic corrective action.
3. Ask for a specific example when a complaint is unclear.
4. Distinguish your responsibility from other contributing factors.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **That mistake was mine.**
Clear ownership, without a hidden 'but'.
2. **This is how I will put it right.**
Move from acknowledgment to an action within your control.
3. **Which specific point caused the problem?**
Clarify before accepting or rejecting an unclear allegation.
4. **I am responsible for this part; the rest is a separate issue.**
Use facts to distinguish responsibilities, not to evade them.

An apology does not restore lost time or require immediate forgiveness. Listen to the impact and avoid promises such as 'This will never happen again' unless you can genuinely support them.

## Accept a valid complaint

You did interrupt the person publicly and speak harshly. Your view about the underlying issue may still differ from theirs.

**Other person**

> You cut me off in front of everyone.

**You**

> I should have let you finish. The way I spoke was not right. Please forgive me.

**Other person**

> It felt as though what I had to say did not matter.

**You**

> I want to understand what you were trying to say. Please finish your point now; I am listening.

**Other person**

> I was only saying that you should have asked me before deciding.

**You**

> So the difficulty was that a shared decision was made first and your view was asked for afterward?

**Other person**

> Yes, exactly.

**You**

> That is a valid point. I should have asked first. Let us reconsider whatever can still be changed, with both our views included.

### What to notice

The learner owns an actual behavior, listens to the complaint, and checks the meaning. The repair concerns what can still be changed. They do not treat every objection as pressure to resist.

### When the situation changes

If the person does not want to talk now, respect that boundary. Do not insist that they hear your apology again or forgive you immediately.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. You failed to send an update

> I should have told you as soon as the time changed. You had to wait because of my mistake. I am sorry.

Possible follow-up: An apology will not give me my time back.

The acknowledgment is specific. Do not argue that an apology should erase the inconvenience. A realistic change in your own process is the next step.

Possible ending: Next time I will report the change promptly and also check that the message reached you.

### 02. Do not accept inaccurate total blame

> I sent the information one day late; that was my mistake. The other two days were spent awaiting approval. Let us check the dates together.

Possible follow-up: Now you are shifting the blame to others?

Begin with the part that is yours. Then use the timeline to clarify the remaining delay without inventing motives or denying your own contribution.

Possible ending: My one-day delay is clear. Let us also record the other obstacle separately so that it can be addressed.

### 03. Raise a complaint with examples

> The work arrived late twice last week. What caused the difficulty on those two occasions? Let us understand that first.

Possible follow-up: You only notice my mistakes.

The question names observable events and invites information. If your own changes contributed, include those facts in the revised plan.

Possible ending: I will communicate changes earlier, and you will report obstacles promptly. We will agree any revised date together.

**Chapter 10 / English explanation**

## Protect and repair the relationship

Correct the way you spoke without making a false promise.

Respect, agreement, and apology are different matters. You can apologize for a harsh response while still declining the request. You can also start a difficult conversation or express genuine appreciation without bargaining for something.

### What to do

1. Explain what you want to clear up.
2. Keep respect for the person separate from agreement with the request.
3. Take responsibility for your own harsh wording.
4. Do not turn an apology into consent you do not mean.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **I would like to clarify something.**
Starts a conversation instead of waiting for conflict.
2. **My tone was harsh; please forgive me.**
 Apologizes for an identifiable behavior.
3. **My opinion is still different.**
 Makes the remaining disagreement explicit.
4. **I appreciate this about what you did.**
Name the specific helpful action; avoid empty praise.

Do not use 'I was only being honest' to avoid responsibility for an insult. Equally, do not withdraw a legitimate boundary just to prove your apology is sincere.

[Urdu practice](#page-55)

---

[English explanation](#english-56)

**Chapter 10 / English explanation**

## Apologize for the manner, keep the decision separate

You do not want to lend money. Under pressure, you said, 'Why do you not understand?' You now want to correct that harsh response without reversing your refusal.

**Other person**

> I did not like the way you refused.

**You**

> The way I spoke was harsh. I should not have said it that way. I am sorry.

**Other person**

> Then help me.

**You**

> My answer about the loan is still no. But I should have said that respectfully.

**Other person**

> Then what is the point of apologizing?

**You**

> I am apologizing for how I spoke. The decision about the money is separate. I will not lend it.

**Other person**

> Fine. Leave it, then.

**You**

> All right. I am sorry that my harsh manner hurt you.

### What to notice

The apology addresses a real mistake in delivery. It does not imply consent to the loan. The learner makes the distinction explicit rather than using money to purchase acceptance of the apology.

### When the situation changes

If the person ends the discussion, do not pursue them simply to make your explanation feel complete. Respect their decision not to continue.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. An elder's advice and your decision

> Your view matters to me. Which possible harm concerns you most? I want to understand that and then make my decision.

Possible follow-up: We have seen more of life than you have.

The answer asks about the concern rather than disputing the person's age or experience. Listening is not an advance promise to follow the advice.

Possible ending: I understand your concern. I will examine that aspect before deciding, but I am not agreeing now to leave the work.

### 02. Repair a public interruption

> I should have let you finish. The way I spoke was wrong. Please forgive me. Please finish your point now; I am listening.

Possible follow-up: You have done this before too.

The response takes responsibility for a specific behavior. Acknowledge a genuine repeated pattern if there is one, rather than using the current apology to shut down the complaint.

Possible ending: I have heard your full point. My mistake in how I spoke is separate; now let us discuss the underlying issue calmly.

### 03. Express genuine appreciation

> Yes. Because you told me in time, I could change my arrangements. Thank you for that.

Possible follow-up: It was such a small thing. There is no need to thank me.

The appreciation names the action and its effect. There is no hidden bargain or request attached to the thanks.

Possible ending: Your timely update genuinely made things easier.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 11 / English explanation**

## Adapt to the person and setting

Respect roles without abandoning the facts.

A supervisor, elder, colleague, or group may require a different opening. The purpose remains clear understanding: check instructions, ask for a turn, verify a third-party report, and avoid assuming agreement.

### What to do

1. Question conflicting information respectfully, even when the other person has authority.
2. Ask clearly to finish your point when interrupted.
3. Verify claims about what an absent person wants or feels.
4. Do not treat an unclear response as definite consent.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **The information I have says this.**
Describes your evidence without attacking someone's memory.
2. **Let me finish my point, then I will listen to yours.**
Requests a turn and commits to reciprocity.
3. **Did they say this themselves?**
Checks the source of a claim; ask without implying dishonesty.
4. **Should I take this as definite agreement, or is something still unresolved?**
Checks consent rather than guessing from tone.

Adapting your wording does not require public confrontation. Choose a private discussion when appropriate. The ability to ask a question does not remove real power differences or possible consequences.

## Check a conflicting instruction respectfully

A supervisor says the deadline is Wednesday, while your written notice says Thursday. Allow for the possibility that an update did not reach you.

**Supervisor**

> This is needed by Wednesday. That is what we agreed.

**You**

> The written notice I have says Thursday. Was the date changed after that?

**Supervisor**

> No, there was no new notice. Show me your message.

**You**

> Here it is. It says Thursday, and I was working to that schedule.

**Supervisor**

> All right, it is Thursday. But I need one part on Wednesday.

**You**

> Which part is needed first? I can provide that Wednesday and the rest Thursday.

**Supervisor**

> Give me the first part Wednesday.

**You**

> Agreed. The first part Wednesday, the rest Thursday. I will write down the revised order.

### What to notice

The learner describes the evidence available to them and asks about a possible update. They do not attack the supervisor's memory or status. A new request is then handled as a scheduling question.

### When the situation changes

If the written information proves you mistaken, acknowledge that. The aim is an accurate shared plan, not a victory over the supervisor.

Your objective: Ask the decision-maker to clarify the priority.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Conflicting priorities from a supervisor

> Within today's time I can complete one task. If the new one comes first, the earlier one moves to tomorrow or needs someone else's help. Which should take priority?

Possible follow-up: I need both today. Find a way.

This describes the capacity problem and possible choices. Do not volunteer another person's labor without confirmation that they are available and assigned.

Possible ending: I will complete the new task today. Responsibility for the earlier task will be arranged separately with another colleague.

### 02. Repeated interruption in a group

> One moment. Let me finish my point, then I will listen to yours.

Possible follow-up: You are not letting me speak.

The request is limited to finishing a point, not controlling the entire discussion. Follow through by yielding the floor.

Possible ending: That is my point. Please complete yours now.

### 03. Pressure through an absent person

> I hear what you are saying. It would be better for me to ask them directly what upset them.

Possible follow-up: Do you not believe me?

Checking a report is not the same as accusing the messenger of lying. Speak directly when appropriate rather than assuming you know the absent person's position.

Possible ending: I will speak with them directly. For now, I will not assign a definite meaning on their behalf.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Chapter 12 / English explanation**

## Close the conversation and follow through

State what is settled and what happens next.

A useful ending identifies the agreement, unresolved issues, responsibilities, and timing. A clear refusal or a pause can also be a complete ending. Do not describe discussion as agreement when consent is missing.

### What to do

1. Briefly restate what was agreed.
2. Name any issue that remains unsettled.
3. Specify the next action, its owner, and its timing.
4. When necessary, pause and agree when or where to return.

### Meaning and tone of the Urdu phrases

These follow the four phrases in the corresponding Urdu section, in the same order.

1. **So what we have agreed is ...**
Summarizes; give the other person a chance to correct it.
2. **We have not agreed on this part yet.**
Protects the distinction between settled and unsettled points.
3. **The next step on my side will be ...**
Take ownership of a specific action.
4. **Let us stop here for now and meet again tomorrow.**
A pause with a return point, not unexplained disappearance.

A future possibility is not a present promise. 'We can discuss it again if the terms change' does not mean you have accepted the work or reserved your time.

[Urdu practice](#page-65)

---

[English explanation](#english-66)

---

**Chapter 12 / English explanation**

## End clearly when agreement is not possible

Two people cannot agree on a term. Continued repetition is not producing new information.

**Other person**

> I cannot go above this amount.

**You**

> And I cannot take on this amount of work at that price. It seems we are not reaching agreement in this form.

**Other person**

> So that is the end of the discussion?

**You**

> On the current terms, yes. If the amount of work or the timing changes, we can discuss it again.

**Other person**

> All right, I will check on my side.

**You**

> Please let me know if the terms change. For now, no commitment has been agreed.

### What to notice

The learner states the mismatch and ends the present negotiation without hostility. They leave a conditional route to another conversation, not an implied promise to accept later.

### When the situation changes

Only leave the door open when you mean it. If you do not want further discussion, use an honest final ending rather than a vague future possibility.

## Understand the sample replies

Read after attempting the exercises. The English below explains the sample Urdu answers. Any ending that names an agreement is conditional on that agreement actually being reached.

### 01. Confirm the arrangement in writing

> Let us repeat it once: I will deliver the first part Thursday, and you will review it and answer by Friday. Is that what we agreed?

Possible follow-up: Why write so much? We have already discussed it.

The sample illustrates ownership and timing. In a real summary, include the actual agreed amount and scope too; do not treat these example dates as facts about your own arrangement.

Possible ending: I am sending the same summary in a message. Please tell me if anything differs.

### 02. 'We will see' was treated as a yes

> My wording was unclear. I should have said that I had not decided yet. I had not given a definite yes.

Possible follow-up: Now you are backing out at the last minute?

The answer does not blame only the listener. State the present decision clearly instead of replacing one ambiguous phrase with another.

Possible ending: I am now saying clearly that I cannot join. I am sorry that my unclear wording caused difficulty.

### 03. Pause until information is available

> One essential fact is still unknown. It will be available tomorrow at ten; let us discuss it at eleven and then decide.

Possible follow-up: You do not want to make a decision at all.

The delay is tied to a named missing fact, not an indefinite wish to avoid deciding. Use only a timing you can reasonably rely on.

Possible ending: Tomorrow at eleven we will compare the two options using that information. Neither option has been selected yet.

Retry the difficult turn in your own Urdu. Check clarity, respect, truthful commitments, and the next step. A sample answer is not the only acceptable answer.

**Phrase reference / English explanation**

## Learn the action behind the phrase

The phrase bank is a set of starting structures. Choose the action you need first, then adjust the words and the level of directness. Do not begin by searching for the most impressive expression.

### Taking time

“Let me think for a moment” requests a pause. “I will answer by this evening” adds a reply deadline. Neither one promises acceptance.

### Clarifying

“Which part are you referring to?” narrows the subject. “Have I understood you correctly?” checks your interpretation. Ask these as genuine questions and use the answer.

### Refusing

“That is not possible for me this time” is a considerate refusal. “My answer on this matter is no” is more explicit. Do not keep a refusal vague merely to sound polite.

### Disagreeing

“My view differs” and “I am looking at this differently” open a disagreement. They do not explain it yet. Add the actual point or reason that matters.

### Soft does not have to mean unclear

Choose wording that fits the relationship and the situation while preserving the meaning. A clear statement in a calm voice can be considerate; adding “maybe” to a definite no changes what the listener is told.

In the four reference pages that follow, the English entries match the Urdu entries in the same top-to-bottom order. Repetition is deliberate: the same action can be useful in different conversations.

**Final assessment / English explanation**

## Can you use the skill somewhere new?

The final assessment combines abilities rather than announcing one move to copy. Give your answer in Urdu. Do not look back at model replies until the attempt is complete.

1. Read the facts carefully. Notice whether the problem involves a genuine mistake, an unclear agreement, conflicting needs, or a legitimate boundary.
2. Choose an opening that fits those facts. Avoid trying to force every situation into the same refusal pattern.
3. Continue through the other person’s next reply. A question should lead to listening; a correction should be considered.
4. Review the actual exchange against the six dimensions in the self-review section.

### Compare fairly with your starting point

Look for changes in behavior: a more specific question, a clearer decision, a shorter truthful explanation, or better handling of pushback. A familiar memorized response is not the same as adapting independently.

### Keep the assessment honest

A partner may clarify an unknown fact when asked, but should not supply the correct strategy or change the scenario to make your first answer work. If hints were used, record that this was guided practice.

The English pages for the six final cases explain the given situations and objectives only. They deliberately do not provide model answers.

### 01. Two needs for one gathering

Speaking with: Two family members

One wants a low-cost venue; a long journey is difficult for the other. Their underlying needs have not yet been fully heard.

Your objective: Clarify both needs without imposing a decision.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> You decide. We cannot agree with each other.

### 02. A lower price and earlier delivery

Speaking with: Client

The client wants the complete work, less cost, and earlier delivery. You can negotiate scope or date, but not lower the required quality.

Your objective: Discover priorities and propose workable terms, or decline.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> Reduce the price and deliver two days earlier too.

After the exchange, record one strength, one change, and a revised answer. Mark whether you completed the attempt independently or with help.

### 03. A harsh public accusation

Speaking with: Supervisor

The supervisor says publicly that you hid important information. You did send an update, but one detail was omitted.

Your objective: Own the omission, correct the overstatement, and leave detailed discussion for an appropriate setting.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> You did not tell us anything.

### 04. Repair a harsh refusal

Speaking with: Friend

Your boundary was legitimate, but the sentence you used was harsh. The friend is hurt by the manner, not only by the refusal.

Your objective: Take responsibility for the delivery while keeping apology and boundary distinct.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> I did not like the way you refused.

### 05. Different understandings of a promise

Speaking with: Work partner

You thought the first part was due Friday; the other person expected the whole job. The earlier message was ambiguous.

Your objective: Hear both understandings, acknowledge the ambiguity, and form a clear new arrangement.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> You promised Friday. Where is the complete work?

### 06. End respectfully despite insistence

Speaking with: Relative

You do not want further discussion of a private decision. The other person repeatedly requests another reason. There is no immediate danger in this exercise.

Your objective: Briefly restate the boundary and end the conversation.

> **Opening line · English meaning**
>
> What is the real reason? Why will you not say it clearly?

**Learning guide / English explanation**

## Run the role-play one turn at a time

You can practise with a partner or use the prompts for self-practice. The trainer’s job is to make the exchange coherent, not to force the learner to win or to resist forever.

1. Give only the situation and the opening line. Let the learner answer before revealing the next turn.
2. Respond to the words actually used. A clear question can uncover information; an honest refusal can be understood even when the other person dislikes it.
3. After the exchange, name one useful behavior and one improvement. Then repeat the difficult turn.
4. Change one factor, such as the relationship or deadline, and try again without copying the model.

### Keep the facts stable

Do not invent a new emergency, extra money, or a hidden mistake just to defeat a good answer. If a real constraint is introduced, explain it. Permit agreement, disagreement, clarification, and an appropriate exit.

### Separate practice from assessment

In guided practice, pause for a hint when needed. In an independent attempt, finish before receiving feedback. With text-only practice, assess wording and decisions, not imagined voice, eye contact, or confidence.

Either participant can stop. Practise ordinary conversations first; the aim is not to tolerate intimidation or to rehearse deception.

## Review six observable dimensions

Use this as a practice review, not a personality test. Assess what was said and done in the exchange; do not infer motives or score qualities you could not observe.

### Understanding

Did you distinguish facts from guesses and clarify what mattered?

### Clarity

Could the listener understand your request, refusal, or decision?

### Purpose and boundary

Did you preserve a legitimate limit while considering relevant new information?

### Respect and honesty

Did you avoid insults, false excuses, and unnecessary hostility?

### Natural language

Could you actually say this Urdu sentence in ordinary conversation?

### Closure

Was the agreement, refusal, next step, or pause clear?

### An optional recording scale

Use 0 for not demonstrated, 1 for partial or prompted, and 2 for independent and appropriate. Leave unobservable items unscored. The scale is a practical tracking aid, not a validated measure.

### Read your practice log in the same order

Date; situation; what you first said; one thing that went well; one thing to change; an improved answer in your own words; and the next practice date. The three log pages that follow include English labels beside the Urdu prompts.

A good refusal can score well even when it disappoints someone. An impossible promise does not become a good response because it makes the other person happy.

**Learning guide / English explanation**

## The book ends. The practice continues.

The aim is not a collection of impressive sentences. It is a more dependable habit: pause, understand the situation, choose a purpose, respond clearly, and listen to what comes next.

> Being clear does not mean being harsh. Being considerate does not mean giving in. A good conversation can hold both.

### Choose the next useful repetition

Return to the chapter that matches a real difficulty. Practise a small number of actions well instead of collecting new phrases every day. Change the scenario, complete another turn, and try it again later.

### Keep one honest record

After an ordinary conversation, write down what you actually said, the reply you received, and one change you would make. Keep the improved response short enough that you could say it naturally.

### What to carry forward

You are responsible for your own clarity, honesty, listening, and follow-through. You cannot guarantee another person’s approval. Sometimes the right next move is a question; sometimes it is a clear no, a genuine apology, a revised view, or a respectful end.

English is the explanatory layer in this edition. Urdu remains the language you practise and use. Adapt the examples to your real circumstances without mixing English into the Urdu dialogue.
